DEIB = Engagement π
Good Morning! π
This is Mariam Mushtaq from HR Brain Pickings - welcome to this weekβs first edition. Hope you all had a great long weekend! π
As I read up on the different aspects of employee engagement, one thing I couldn't fully comprehend is how DEIB and engagement influenced each other. Letβs explore. π
DEIB x Employee Engagement π€
Here's what I learned so far:
β Feeling Valued: What happens when employees feel their unique backgrounds and perspectives are truly valued and respected? They're not just more engaged in their work; they're also deeply committed to the organization. It's amazing how much difference a little appreciation can make, right? π
β Diversity = Innovation: When you have a team with diverse perspectives and experiences, you're essentially setting the stage for creativity and problem-solving. Imagine the possibilities! π‘
Eye-Opening Statistics on DEIB π
1οΈβ£ According to the most recent State of HR Report, only 35 people of the 400+ respondents listed diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) as their top priority. Adding to the fact that only 1% of respondents said they even had roles in diversity. π€―
2οΈβ£ Studies by ADP have shown that employees who are satisfied with their organization's commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I) are 2x as engaged as dissatisfied employees. π
3οΈβ£ Changeboard notes that diverse and inclusive organizations work 12% harder, are 19% more likely to stay longer with the organization, and collaborate 57% more effectively with peers.
Understanding DEIB π
There is a lot to uncover when it comes to DEIB - but letβs start with the basics of the concept.
π Diversity: Think of diversity as a mix of demographics - gender, age, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, location, nationality, disability status, and more.
The broader this spectrum, the richer the diversity in your organization.
βοΈ Equity: An equitable workplace is about ensuring everyone has the opportunities and resources they need to succeed, regardless of their background.
It's about fairness in access, opportunities, and advancement for all.
π€ Inclusion: Inclusion is about creating a space where everyone, irrespective of their differences, is treated with respect and care.
It's where every voice is valued and heard.
π Belonging: This is where every employee feels like they are an integral part of the team.
It's about fostering a space of psychological safety, where expressing oneself doesn't lead to fear or judgment.
