Data-Driven Employee Wellbeing: KPMG Case Study

Is it just me, or does the end of the year sneak up on us so fast?! As the calendar days slip by, it's a good reminder for leaders to check in on their team members' well-being—not just their work performance.

Let’s talk data and well-being. I always thought “Data” and “wellbeing” in the same sentence? Doesn’t sound very genuine. Well, I came across this case study from KPMG who used a data-driven strategy to tackle employee burnout.

😰 The Challenge:

Burnout is a problem most companies out there are trying to tackle. KPMG wanted to ensure that employees were not working more hours than expected, not skipping their PTO, or spending far too much time on calls. 🚨 That's a recipe for burnout, folks. So, how do you catch this before it spirals out of control?

🤔 The Solution:

This year, KPMG announced an “energy check-in” initiative aimed at identifying and supporting at-risk employees. After successfully piloting the program in a smaller division last year, KPMG plans to roll it out company-wide to their 36,000 employees and partners by the end of 2024. (in-progress).

📝 Key Learnings:

1. ☑️ Start Small, Then Scale: KPMG wisely began with a smaller pilot before going big. If you’re thinking about something similar, or any initiative really - always test it out with a smaller group before launching company-wide. This can help keep HR time and resources in check.

2. ☑️ Support Your Managers: 88% of KPMG’s managers said it would be helpful to have prompts for the check-ins. Rolling out this kind of program isn’t without its challenges—especially when it comes to giving managers the tools and training they need to have meaningful check-ins.

3. ☑️ Create a Culture of Openness: Not everyone will feel comfortable sharing their struggles, but that’s okay. The goal is to give employees that option, if they ever need to.

Managing employee well-being is no easy task, but KPMG’s approach shows that with the right tools and mindset, it’s possible to make a significant impact. So, what do you think—could this work at your company?
