🧑💻 Digital Friction: A Hidden Productivity Killer
We've all heard the buzz about the era of digital transformation—how technology has enabled us to achieve more than we ever imagined in a shorter span of time and brought about numerous positive impacts like enhanced scalability and streamlined processes. 🌟
However, with new solutions come new challenges 😅.
Expectation: Ideally, change management for digital transformation takes time and careful planning. It allows all stakeholders to thoroughly analyze business needs, review the different technologies available, and make informed decisions to build their tech stack. This process also gives everyone involved the time to get accustomed to the new technology and learn how to use it at their own pace. 😀
Reality: Well, when COVID hit, companies embraced remote and hybrid work models, and scrambled to go fully digital. New technologies, tools and apps emerged everywhere, promising to streamline operations, boost profits, and improve employee productivity. 👍
And now, unfortunately, we're starting to see the opposite effect. The proliferation of online tools and software meant to make our work easier is now ironically causing productivity to decline and engagement levels to drop. 📉
The Reality of Digital Experiences
Knowledge workers rely heavily on digital technology to do their jobs. Despite this reliance, the digital experience provided by employers is worsening. 😰
▶️ 50% of all knowledge workers say poor DEX makes them less productive at their job.
▶️ Moreover, 18% of employees rated their digital experience as poor, up from 15% in 2021.
This decline is a significant concern for both productivity and the overall employee experience. One major culprit for poor digital experiences is digital friction.
Digital Friction, defined by Gartner as "the unnecessary effort extended by employees using technology for work," can significantly hinder productivity.
This is unfortunately yet another contributing factor to low employee engagement. Globally, we have only 23% employees engaged at work, according to Gallup.
The negative impacts of poor DEX extend beyond productivity.
▶️ 43% of knowledge workers feel reduced job satisfaction due to poor digital experiences, and
▶️ 29% have considered leaving their job because of it.
Bad digital experiences are contributing to potential burnout, frustration and lower employee engagement levels.
Despite the critical nature of DEX, many employers are not prioritizing it. (no surprise there, eh?)
▶️ Around 30% of employees feel their employer doesn’t pay enough attention to their digital experience.
▶️ Moreover, 59% of knowledge workers say their organization doesn't have a dedicated Employee Experience Manager, or they are even unsure if such a role exists.
There is a pressing need for organizations to reassess and improve digital experiences for their employees. So, what can be done to tackle this challenge? Honestly, there’s a lot that can be done, but let’s take a look at 4 key approaches:
55% of knowledge workers are open to their employer using DEX software to gather data on working patterns and trends if it enables them to demonstrate they are working efficiently from home
